Enumclaw School Bonds Proposition No. 1 approved by four votes

It's official. After two weeks of a voting counting roller coaster the proposition was certified as approved with 60.05 percent, 3913 votes, a margin of about four votes.

Three votes. That was the razor thin margin of approval for the Enumclaw School District bond proposition after the May 8 count posted on the King County Elections website.

Cities get through emotional turmoil | Our Corner

The next few weeks will bring the opening innings of a bucket full of local political races. Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, Buckley and Sumner have four city council seats up for grabs. Wilkeson has two. Black Diamond has nearly the whole clubhouse on the ballot due to a mix of expiring terms and resignations. The filing period is May 11-15.

The legislators spent 105 days, beginning Jan. 12, with each chamber and the governor scribbling out a budget, and that is about where it stands.

Superior Court reverses anti-SLAPP decision

A King County District Court ruling rising out of the political heat waves surrounding the King County Fire District 28 was reversed by the Superior Court April 9. King County Superior Court Judge Veronica Alicea Galván reversed a district court decision against Ted DeVol and Michael Qualls and awarding $30,000 in statutory damages to Ted and Beth Fehr and $30,000 to Casey and Angelina Taylor.

Trainers, jockeys and horses at the track | Emerald Downs

The marquee race each year at Emerald Downs is the $200,000 Longacres Mile, Grade 3. It is the top-billed race among a series of stakes featured at the Auburn oval. The 2014 winner of the Mile, Stryker Phd, will be attempting to become the third horse in the 80-year history of the Mile to win the stakes back-to-back. The most recent was Simply Majestic in 1988-89. Trooper Seven won in 1980-81.

The central nervous system of Emerald Downs is tucked away behind Sally and Joe Steiner’s Quarter Chute Cafe – the racing office. It is the one spot possibly least known to the public. Without the daily work going on behind the chest-high counter, the gates do not open either for the public or the horses.

District stresses safety with ballots in hand

The Enumclaw School District Proposition No. 1 bond for school renovation and construction is on the April 28 special election ballot. It is an all-mail election. The ballots and voters pamphlets were mailed last week and must be postmarked by the 28th to be valid; or, ballots can be taken to a drop box location or a special “drop-off van.”

Winging to freedom | Life Outdoors

A rehabilitated female bald eagle flew to freedom March 20 on a section of the Green River west of Flaming Geyser State Park. Dr. Jan White, a veterinarian and founder of South Sound Critter Care, and Lisa Horn, executive director of West Sound Wildlife Shelter, met at Coates Christmas Tree Farm to release the eagle.

Emergency radio levy on King County ballot

Voters throughout the Enumclaw area will help decide a property tax levy on the April 28 special election ballot seeking funds to replace the county’s emergency radio system. Members of the King County Council approved the ordinance 8-1 to place the levy on the ballot, with only Councilman Pete von Reichbauer voting against the measure.

I have been running around and staying up too late the last few weekends covering the state winter sports tournaments, primarily at the Tacoma Dome. The true fun of this job for me is covering a wide array of sports. Once the state tournaments begin I get to run from one sport to the another, sending my crazy-person meter into the zippy zone.

Once again The Courier-Herald is off the press and the sky still appears to be propped up and in place, although I haven’t checked in the last 15 minutes. One moment, please…. OK, the sky is still up and I am still down – I will keep writing. I have been thinking a great deal recently about the multiple roles a newspaper plays in a community (My single-cell of gray goo needed a few extra injections of out-of-date buttermilk to keep up with this thinking stuff).

Enumclaw boys wrestling wins state title

The Enumclaw High boys wrestling team reached the top of world at the Mat Classic state tournament Saturday winning the 3A crown. The team won the state title in a tight race with North Central that went down to the wire. The Hornets pulled it out scoring 110 points to 108.5 for North Central. The team took home an individual state crown, one second, two third place finishes and a fourth.

KC Moulden won her third consecutive wrestling title at the Mat Classic Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Moulden pinned Sophia Munoz from Highline in 1:38. Moulden pinned Amber Cramsey-Behnke in 1 minute, 19 seconds in the first round.

The newspaper business is all about changing and adapting – it always has been. So, readers of The Courier-Herald will see a change in weekly content beginning next week. The newspaper will be covering the entire Plateau in one publication. Through this week, The Courier-Herald has published both an Enumclaw edition and Bonney Lake edition. Beginning with the March 4 issue, the two publications will merge into one – simply, The Courier-Herald.
