Changes are coming to Skeek’s in Wilkeson

Another change is coming to Skeek’s, the Church Street business owned by longtime Wilkeson resident Lambert “Skeek” Gonzales.
With a grand opening planned for all day Saturday, Gonzales will introduce a new menu that highlights pasties, a staple of the miners who inhabited the region a century ago. A pastie, Gonzales said, is a Cornish/Welsh combination of meat and potatoes wrapped in puff pastry. Also new to the menu will be seafood chowder on Fridays; it’s a change, he said, from the clam chowder every other restaurant offers.
The pizza, pastries and ice cream will remain but some new furniture and new help will give the business at 535 Church St. a different look and feel. The mini-museum, a tribute to Gonzales and his lifetime of memories of the region, is intact.
Saturday’s grand opening will include tastings of all his offerings, plus plenty of prizes, Gonzales said.
The owner is a walking encyclopedia of foothills history, born in Carbonado and a decades-long resident of Wilkeson. He married an Enumclaw native, spent seven years working in the Wilkeson sandstone quarry made a career with Safeway. He has been in business in Wilkeson since 1975 and bought his Church Street building in 1978
