Organizers for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Buckley want everyone to come “back to the future” – a future in which cancer is treatable or preventable. To get there, join 3 million Americans in celebrating 2009’s Relay For Life silver anniversary year. Twenty-five local teams, sponsored by schools, businesses and friends, have registered for this year’s event scheduled for May 15 and 16 along River Road in Buckley near the youth center.

Relay For Life is an overnight event to increase cancer awareness while raising money for the American Cancer Society. Experience team camaraderie while walking or enjoying activities or local entertainment. It’s a memorable way to be pro-active and contribute to curing a disease that more than 31,000 Washingtonians will be diagnosed with each year.

Join teams like the top fundraisers, the Hungry Housewives, whose sucessful scrapbooking day in the fall helped them raise more than $1,600. This group of seven women started getting together in 2004 to eat, socialize and exchange premade meals. They’ve expanded their volunteer work from contributing meals for families in need to being active in Relay For Life. According to the team’s founder Alisa Garate, they participate in Relay For Life “because we believe in an organization that is fighting to cure all cancers and are eager to be a part of something that touches so many lives and will benefit all of us.”

Details for the Hungry Housewives’ other events will be available soon, including a March poker tournament, another scrapbook event and a mid-April fashion show at Suburban Soul in Enumclaw. Tickets are $12 for the fashion show and include wine and food. Ten percent of all sales goes to Relay For Life.

It’s not to late to start a team. Anyone interested in forming a team or joining a registered team can check out the Web site at www.relayforlifeofbuckley.com or contact Dianna Billingsley at 360-829-9078 or jdtb01@msn.com.

The next team captain meeting is at 7 p.m. March 4 at the Buckley Multi-Purpose Center; the contact person is Penny Frame at p4frame@yahoo.com or 253-222-4181.
