Sheila Shannon, author of “Shear Determination: A View from Behind the Chair,” will be the Plateau Area Writers Association’s guest speaker from 10 a.m. to noon March 9 at the Enumclaw Public Library.

Raised in Enumclaw, Shannon couldn’t wait to get out of town to experience the world. Sixteen years later she found herself back home in Enumclaw, pregnant, single and in a career she didn’t respect, didn’t want and didn’t appreciate.

After 20 years behind the salon chair, she has come to view her trade in a different light. She’s learned what’s important in her life: people, community and relationships.

She said her book has been a personal victory.

“Fifteen years in the making, I am proud and pleased to have had the opportunity to bring some of my clients to life,” she said. “I thank them and honor them, for they have had a huge impact on my life. I have been blessed.”

Shannon has published two stories, “The Kentucky Derby” and “Irish Pinch,” in the Washington Thoroughbred magazine.
