Enumclaw's Autumn Winds is Sept. 20

The Greta Matassa's Trio, Bobby Medina and his Latin Jazz Band a the comical Rod Long will headline the city of Enumclaw's Autumn Winds: An Evening with Jazz, and a few laughs for good measure, Sept. 20 at the Enumclaw Expo Center.

The evening kicks off at 4 p.m. and is expected to run through 8 on the north lawn of the Enumclaw Expo Center. Plans are in place for several local vendors to provide shopping and eating options, as well as an art show.

Matassa, recently voted "Northwest Vocalist of the Year" by Earshot Jazz, is expected to bring crowds to their feet. This marks the sixth time she has received Northwest Vocalist of the Year honors in 15 years.

"Greta Matassa is one of the most talented singers working in jazz today," city of Enumclaw Cultural Programs Coordinator Gary LaTurner said.

According to a press release from the city of Enumclaw, Matassa has been a mainstay on Seattle's jazz stages for many years and with her recent tours of Russia, Singapore and Hawaii, her sound is reaching new audiences. She has released seven CDs on the respected jazz label Origin Records and a DVD live concert with Mimi Fox. In May, she released her latest CD on Resonance Records featuring the Los Angeles pianist and arranger Tamir Hendelman, as well as a host of Los Angeles mainstay musicians. She receives regular national airplay and is increasingly recognized as a unique voice in jazz, LaTurner noted.

An Enumclaw favorite, Medina will perform with his Latin Jazz Band. He is an accomplished trumpeter who has apprenticed with artists like Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Poncho Sanchez, Eddie Cano and Mel Brown among others. Medina is presently bringing his own brand of Latin influenced jazz to audiences in America and Europe.

“I’m trying to take what I’ve learned from these great performers and mix that with the music I grew up on, Latin and jazz," he said in a press release. "With this I’ve come up with a sound that crosses over and appeals to people on many levels.”

Long, a popular attraction in Northwest and Canadian comedy clubs, provides the humor for the evening.

He won the 1987 Seattle International Comedy Competition and the 1998 “Emerald City’s Funniest Person” contest. He has been seen on the Showtime Comedy Club Network -- twice -- and has performed at Caesar’s Palace, Caroline’s, the Comedy Underground, and many other venues throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. He has opened for greats like The Temptations, Ray Charles and Jerry Seinfeld.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance in person at the Enumclaw Parks Department or by phone at 360-825-3594. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event.
