A three part, educational event about genetically modified foods (GMOs) will be held in Sumner on September 14. Attendants are encouraged to enjoy any or all portions of the day, free of charge.

The event is designed to educate and inform consumers about the effects of GMOs and the importance of food labeling. Jubilee Naturals, located at 909 Main Street, will host three screenings of the film “Genetic Roulette – The Gamble of Our Lives” at 10 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. The film examines negative effects of genetically modified foods on those who consume them. Organic, GMO-free popcorn will be served during each showing.

For part two, Sumner Animal Grub will hold an ice cream social from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This portion of the event is sponsored by Ben and Jerry’s and the Volunteers for Yes on 522 campaign. Ballot Initiative 522 would require GMOs to be labeled as such. Third-generation Iowa farmer and crop nutrition advisor Howard Vlieger will be speaking about his personal story and experiences with chemical-based versus organic farming practices.

The final installment will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Sumner Pierce County Library. Local grassroots activists Katharine Rode and Jill Cartwright will lead a discussion regarding GMOs. Local farmers, business owners, residents, media and activists have been invited.

Prior registration is not required. For more information about Volunteers for Yes on 522, please visit their website.
