Dec 09 2008, 1:40 AM There is a new enterprise rising in Buckley and its future is so bright it has to wear shades – or tinting.

“Our first month of business far exceeded our expectations. Our phone has been ringing off the hook,” said Plateau entrepreneur Benjamin Owen, whose shop not only handles individual clients, but also has contracts to do window tinting work on vehicles from Enumclaw Chrysler Jeep, Gamblin Motors and Fugate Ford and Mazda.

Fugate employee Kurt Kranc, who brings cars and trucks into The Tint Shop on a regular basis, gave Owen a ringing endorsement.

“This is a big wrestling community with a lot of athletes out here who are interested in fighting. This gives them a venue to train,” he said.

Hougland, who also works at Enumclaw’s Helac, is owner and trainer. He has been training for 10 years. He began with Muay Thai kick-boxing and moved into cross-training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position to force an opponent to submit. A California native, he started fighting professionally in 2001. He moved to Washington a couple years ago and has been training with James Foster Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Kent, an affiliate of the gym he’s opening with his wife Kirsten at 1226 Marshall Ave. in Enumclaw.

Crafters head to Buds and Blooms
Dec 09 2008, 1:41 AM Buds and Blooms owner Lucas Christenson is looking for crafters to fill the nooks and crannies of his popular flower shop on the corner of Griffin Avenue and Porter Street in Enumclaw. He’s hoping to nestle their pieces between his large inventory of fresh flowers, tropical plants, European garden baskets, contemporary and traditional arrangements and silk and dried floral arrangements.

Christenson is opening a consignment shop in the area that once was home to Buds and Blooms’ giftware.

The longtime Buds and Blooms owner, whose family has been in the flower and plant business for 35 years, is scaling down his giftware to make room for more – what else? – plants and flowers. The Enumclaw business has been expanding that side of the business. Christenson has added a Web site, www.enumclawflorist.com, and recently and two wire services, Teleflora and FTD, to provide customers with more options for their wedding, funeral, holiday and everyday floral needs.

New taxi service keeps Plateau moving
Dec 09 2008, 1:41 AM Enumclaw resident Bob Taylor has invested in taxi cabs – which could turn into a very lucrative enterprise this time of year, when Christmas parties are in full swing and folks are looking for a little holiday cheer. “Make no mistake about it, we like it when people party, especially late at night, because that is how we pick up more than a few of our fares,” said Taylor, owner of 3 Aces Taxi in Buckley.

While being a cabbie doesn’t exactly have the reputation of being a safe occupation, Taylor said most of his clientele on the Plateau are hard-working, honest people who are either looking to avoid a drunk driving ticket; are having car problems and have to get from point A to point B somehow; or simply need a ride to the airport from Buckley or Enumclaw.
