White River High wrestlers look forward to kicking off the season Thursday with South Puget Sound League 3A rival Sumner, but it’s Saturday’s White River Classic that will let the Hornets know where they stand or what they have to work on early in the season.

With six varsity players back for another year of action, including four starters, the White River Hornets will look to climb in the South Puget Sound League 3A boys basketball standings.The Hornets traveled a rocky road a season ago, the first campaign under veteran coach Bill Hawk, who made his mark at nearby Enumclaw High before spending a few seasons outside the area.
Veterans return to lead HornetsTwo days into turnouts, coach Joe Klein had eight Lady Hornets on the mat going drill-for-drill with their male counterparts in the school’s wrestling room.
Klein said he’s excited about the girls’ season and the growth of the program.

Band members mentor students

White River Middle School students, under the direction of Karin Moses, joined members of the Gateway Concert Band at a rehearsal Nov. 24. The young musicians were invited to sit next to an adult band “buddy” and play along with the band as they prepared for their “Holiday Time” concert scheduled for Sunday and Monday.White River Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade students also brought their music to share with Gateway band members, and the groups joined forces to play two pieces that the middle school will perform at its Dec. 11 winter concert.
