*Editor's note: the following is a release issued Thursday afternoon by the Washington State Patrol.

Around 8:30 this morning on east bound State Route 410 just east of Greenwater a 38 year old Renton man died when his vehicle struck a tree. A witness stated the Ford Explorer appeared to be attempting to pass another car when it suddenly drove off the roadway and struck a tree head-on. The driver, and only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

The road conditions at the time of collision were bare and wet with slush in places. The collision is still under investigation but speed too fast for conditions is a major factor.

Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution to avoid tragic collisions like this one. Speed that exceeds what the road conditions will support continues to be the main cause of winter weather collisions. Be patient and arrive safely to every destination.

Next of kin were not notified at the time of this release.
