The city of Buckley's historic fire station will wail its siren no more after an official decommissioning closed the building down Wednesday night.

Active and retired firefighters, city politicians, volunteer leaders and Buckley families came out to pack the station garage, watch the Honor Guard give a farewell to the building, and share some final memories of the Volunteer Fire Station 1.

The Buckley Fire Department holds a strong place in some Buckley citizens' hearts; it's remained independent for decades, even as other fire stations have absorbed into larger emergency services bodies.

"I remember one thing this station had (when I started) that my last station did not have: a keg," Chief Alan Predmore said of his first day at the station, and of the good times attitude that predominated. However, he added that at least that particular aspect of on-the-clock protocol had changed.

The evening closed with the tradition of active and retired firefighters pushing the engine out of the garage before it drove off to the new station.
