A man threatening suicide was gunned down outside his Rainier Manor home after ignoring police orders to put down a weapon.

The 47-year-old Sumner man called 911 shortly before 3 p.m. threatening to commit suicide, according to a city press release. Officers from Bonney Lake, Sumner, and participating Metro SWAT departments responded and formed a perimeter around his 142nd Avenue East home, where he barricaded himself inside, alone.

Several details of the case, including the man's motivations, are not clear at this time. What is known is that the man emerged from his home sometime at 4:19 p.m., pointing a weapon at Metro SWAT officers. The officers ordered the man to put down his weapon. He ignored the commands, prompting an officer to respond with deadly force, firing one shot. He died on the scene.

The SWAT member who fired the shot is an officer with the Milton Police Department. Per procedure, he has been placed on paid administrative leave while the case continues to be investigated.

By 5 p.m., residents caught outside during the incident were returning to their homes, and police began clearing out of the area.

One resident, who requested not to be identified, commented that the man had lived in Rainier Manor for about a year.

More details as they arrive.
