Safety Message:

· Cooking fires are a major cause of residential fires and grease fires are fairly common. It is important to understand what is on fire, and the proper way to extinguish it before you try to put out the fire and cause more damage. The National Fire Protection Association advises, “Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.” When trying to put out a grease fire be sure to have everyone evacuate, call 911 immediately, keep loose clothing away from the fire and don’t use water to try and put the fire out.
