Death of inmate in custody at King County Correctional Facility

An inmate in the custody of the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention died on January 31 at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle.

The 32-year old woman from Seattle was found unresponsive by jail staff during an initial headcount at 6:54 am.  Officers immediately called for Jail Health staff. 9-1-1 was notified. Jail Health staff responded, but the woman was pronounced dead by medical responders at 6:56 am.

The woman was booked into the King County jail in downtown Seattle on January 25 on multiple misdemeanor charges.

A determination regarding the cause and manner of death is pending from the King County Medical Examiner.  Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking permission from family members to release further details.

As part of the standard review process for jail-related deaths, the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention will work with Public Health - Seattle & King County to conduct an internal investigation.  The Seattle Police Department will also conduct an independent investigation.
