The Buckley Chamber of Commerce chose former city councilman and native son Bob Olson as the grand marshal for this year's Buckley Log Show Parade.

Olson, a 1963 graduate of White River High School, joined the Navy upon graduating and served aboard the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War, after which he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world.

Olson has been a member of the Buckley Fire Department for nearly 30 years, has been a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1949, a member of the Buckley Eagles and the Masons as well as having taken part in the Buckley Log Show in one capacity or another for the past 25 years.

Olson earned first place trophies in the ax throw in 1975 and 1976 and he and Wally Grey finished first in the double bucking competition four years in a row.

Olson said growing up in and being a citizen of Buckley “has been interesting,” and that his most worthwhile accomplishment persuading his fellow council members to have nature carvings done on the three tree trunks next to the post office.
