Girls' creations found atop the stars of 'Molly Brown'
By Brenda Sexton
The Achievement Girls from the Enumclaw First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently gathered to learn the fine art of millinery. Their sequined and feathered headpieces will be part of the costuming of Plateau Community Players' upcoming musical production of the "The Unsinkable Molly Brown."
Kathy Johnson, wearing two hats as leader of the Achievement Girls and president of Plateau Community Players, organized the event.
The Achievement Girls program is designed to give girls ages 8 through 11 an opportunity to put gospel principles into action by learning useful skills, developing talents and serving others. Johnson explained, the centerpiece of the program is the Faith in God Award, and one of the requirements is to create an original piece of artwork and display it.
"I thought that making hair ornaments for PCP's upcoming show would be a unique way to fill that requirement," Johnson said.
Tanya Cline, the costumer and co-director for "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," gave the girls free range to create whatever they wanted, using the materials she supplied. The girls have been invited to attend a full dress rehearsal of the show to see their creations on stage, and also to fulfill another of their Faith in God requirements - to attend a cultural event in the community.
The Enumclaw girls who participated are: Caitlin Harris, Marne Cook, Kayla Rodarte, Rebekah Russell and Jordan Koontz.
"The Unsinkable Molly Brown" hits the stage Thursday through Saturday, May 6-7 and May 12-14 at the White River High theater, 26928 120th St. E., in Buckley. Admission is $10 for adults or $8 for students and seniors. The curtain goes up each night at 7:30. There will be matinee showings at 2 p.m. May 7 and May 14 with tickets for $5.
