Buckley firefighters mix stair climb training with fundraising

For a 24-hour period running from noon Friday until noon Saturday, members of the Buckley Fire Department will be walking, tag-team style, on a Summit Training Machine at the Anytime Fitness location in town.

It’s not just about fitness.

The firefighters are hoping people will stop by at any time during the 24-hour span and pledge their support to department members who have signed up for this year’s Scott Firefighter Stairclimb at Columbia Tower in Seattle on March 8. The annual event supports the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and with the help of more than 225 different fire departments from all over the globe brought in more than $500,000 in 2008.

Buckley’s relatively small department has, for four out of the past five years, raised more money than any other department entered in the event.

Anytime Fitness has provided incentives for those thinking about pledging.

For a $50 donation, Anytime Fitness will waive its initial sign-up fee and give one month’s free membership and two weeks of free tanning and other gifts.

Those unable to make it to the gym to pledge can contact Kris Howard at 206-957-4562 or the Buckley Fire Station at 360-829-1441.
