Three Plateau teams eliminated from state hoop tournament

The state tournament experience for three Plateau teams came to a screeching halt Friday in the Tacoma Dome.

Both the boys and girls teams from Enumclaw High had qualified for the four-day state tourney, along with the White River High girls. All three were winners Wednesday, but all lost Thursday and Friday and were eliminated.

The Enumclaw High boys lost Friday 54-52 to Seattle Prep in a hard-fought game that was close all the way and included a controversial finish. With EHS trailing by two points, it appeared a foul had been committed that would have given the Hornets an opportunity to tie the game. Officials ruled there was no foul, however, and the game was over.

Enumclaw led 25-24 at halftime and was up 42-36 after three quarters of play.

Taylor Myers scored 10 points in the third quarter and finished with a team-high 18. Jayson Lewis finished with 15 points.

The EHS boys opened tournament play Wednesday with a victory over the O’Dea Fighting Irish and lost Thursday to Meadowdale.

Enumclaw’s girls lost 52-40 Friday to Lakeside.

The Hornets trailed by 10 points at halftime but rallied in the third period to cut the deficit to 33-30. The rally was short-lived, however, and Lakeside pulled away for the win.

Senior Mara Koplitz finished her EHS career with 18 points.

The Hornet girls opened tourney play Wednesday with a victory over Franklin High before losing Thursday to Meadowdale.

The White River girls were eliminated Friday with a 49-35 loss to Prairie High of Battle Ground.

White River didn’t have a field goal in the first quarter and fell into an 18-5 hole. The Hornets spent the next two quarters fighting back and cut the Prairie lead to four points before running out of gas.
