When Buckley City Councilman Ron Weigelt stepped down a month ago, it was discovered that the city didn't have a policy for filling a vacancy caused by the resignation of a council member whose term has not yet expired.

The council remedied that situation and now has an exact methodology for filling vacated positions.

Council vacancies will be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of the council, with the appointee serving only until the next regular general election; at that time, a person will be elected to serve the remainder of the unexpired term.

The city will soon advertise the council vacancy, detailing the requirements necessary to hold public office. Candidates will submit an application that includes the question, "Is there anything in your background that would bring discredit to this city if appointed?"

For information regarding the application process, call Buckley City Hall at 360-829-1921.
