Citizens detain drunk driver
By Dennis Box, The Courier-Herald
At 9 a.m. on Jan. 26, a 19-year-old male was arrested by Bonney Lake police and charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence, being a minor in possession of liquor, possessing illegal knives and unlawful possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The incident began when the suspect drove down the wrong side of state Route 410, in the vicinity of the 195th Avenue East intersection.
The driver nearly hit three cars, including a lumber truck, it was reported.
"I saw him coming and I stopped and crawled up on the seat to avoid the impact on my legs," a lumber truck driver said, requesting not to be identified. "He swerved at the last second and I could see beer bottles in his car when I looked down."
A woman then blocked the road with her Suburban and the driver stopped.
The truck driver ran back to the car and coaxed the suspect, who was slumped over the wheel of the car, to get into the back seat. The truck driver drove the suspect's car into the parking lot near Jack in the Box.
In the parking lot the suspect got out of his car and tried to get the truck driver to return his keys. When that failed, the suspect took off on foot.
The woman driving the Suburban ran after the suspect, detained him and helped bring him back to the scene.
He was arrested by officers Brian Byerley and Vince Sainati. Two knives were found on the suspect, one being a "butterfly" knife, which is considered a concealed weapon.
Police Chief Bryan Jeter wrote thank-you letters to both the woman who pursued the suspect and the driver of the lumber truck.
