Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by the Washington State Patrol.

23 year-old Nathaniel G. Hemminger was killed in a collision Sunday in west Thurston County. At 2:18 p.m. state troopers were dispatched to a one-vehicle collision on State Route 8 west of Olympia.

Troopers determined 25-year-old Heather M. Rood was driving a 2003 Honda Civic eastbound on State Route 8 at milepost 17. Rood left the roadway near the off ramp to Winslow Road and struck a tree. The vehicle rotated around and came to rest on its top.

Hemminger was sitting in the back seat behind the driver where the majority of the collision impact was directed. Shane M. Logan was sitting in the front passenger seat and was not injured. A 2- year-old boy was in a car seat behind Logan and was also uninjured. Rood sustained minor injuries and is being treated at St. Peters hospital in Olympia.

This collision is still under investigation. A blood draw was administered and Rood’s blood will be analyzed. All the occupants were wearing seatbelts.
