White River Middle School students, under the direction of Karin Moses, joined members of the Gateway Concert Band at a rehearsal Nov. 24. The young musicians were invited to sit next to an adult band “buddy” and play along with the band as they prepared for their “Holiday Time” concert scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

White River Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade students also brought their music to share with Gateway band members, and the groups joined forces to play two pieces that the middle school will perform at its Dec. 11 winter concert.

The Gateway Concert Band, under the direction of Jack Prindle, is a community band made up of adults who studied music as students and continue to enjoy music in their adult life. Moses said Gateway members remarked it was great to see the generations of musicians mix together, and to see mentoring going on all around the room during the rehearsal.

Most importantly, Prindle said, is that students could experience what teachers and parents have always assured them: that music can be a life-long and rewarding experience.

The Gateway Concert Band takes to the stage for its “Holiday Time” concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at White River High School auditorium and again at 7:15 p.m. Monday at the Enumclaw High School auditorium. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is recommended.

The White River Middle School winter concert begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the White River High School auditorium. Admission is free.
