Benefits for safe riders during National Bike Safety Month

Henschell Chiropractic will hand out free fitted bicycle helmets in the old Albertson's parking lot Saturday. Police in Bonney Lake and Sumner are handing out "tickets" for free fast food products to children practicing safe ridership.

May is National Bike Safety month, and local businesses and public safety agencies are doing their part to incentivize safe ridership.

East Pierce firefighters and Bonney Lake and Sumner police are handing out tickets to young bicyclists, safe and unsafe alike — but the safe bicyclists shouldn’t mind a bit. The “safety tickets” — handed out to children wearing their helmets and exercising proper restraint behind their handlebars — will be redeemable for a free ice cream cone or children’s meal at McDonald’s.

On Saturday, Henschell Chiropractic will host Bicycle Helmet Safety Day in the old South Prairie Road Albertson’s parking lot. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., children accompanied by their parents or guardians can obtain free fitted bicycle helmets and child ID kits while supplies last. East Pierce Fire and Rescue will operate its fire safety house simulation from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and clowns Glitterbug and Beep Beep will entertain kids with balloon animals and face painting from 10 a.m. to noon. One lucky child will walk away with a free bike.

The event will take place at 19950 South Prairie Road in Bonney Lake.
