Bonney Lake longshoreman, 46, dies in accident at Port of Tacoma

The victim — a seven-year employee of the Pierce County Terminal, an "A" member union man and journeyman crane mechanic — was inspecting wires at the top of a crane alongside another mechanic when he was fatally injured for as-yet-unknown reasons.

An unidentified Bonney Lake man, 46 years old, died Wednesday in an industrial accident at the Port of Tacoma.

The victim — a seven-year employee of the Pierce County Terminal, an “A” member union man and journeyman crane mechanic — was inspecting wires at the top of a crane alongside another mechanic when he was fatally injured for as-yet-unknown reasons.

“It was a routine inspection,” ILWU Local 23 President Scott Mason said. “I don’t know what went wrong.”

Mason was returning from notifying the victim’s family when contacted Wednesday afternoon. He declined to identify the man, who would have been 47 Wednesday, citing a wish to respect the family’s privacy in their time of mourning.

The man has one 19-year-old son.

Emergency personnel responded to the accident shortly after noon.

The port was immediately shut down for the day, and is scheduled to reopen 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The Washington state Department of Labor and Industries is investigating the accident, as will the port, the man’s employer and the union, Mason said.

The Courier-Herald will report more details as they develop.
