Bonney Lakes days to end with a bang on Saturday

As summer begins to wane it is time once again for annual Bonney Lake Days festival.

Now in its sixth year after a multiple year hiatus, this year’s celebration features something no Bonney Lake Days before has ever had: Fireworks over Lake Tapps, courtesy of Cascade Water Alliance.

Bonney Lake Events Coordinator David Wells said he met with Cascade in the spring and they were interested in getting involved.

“They felt it would be a perfect fit,” Wells said. “What better way to help showcase our event than to do something over the lake?

“It will be a great ‘boom, we are done,'” he said of the show, expected to last about 10 minutes.

But before the fireworks light up the night skies at around 9 p.m. is a full day of fun at Allan Yorke Park, beginning with the five-mile fun run, sponsored by Fleet Feet, at 9:30 a.m. and a parade at 9:45 a.m.

According to Wells, the fun run’s course will take participants past all three lakes in the city limits, from Lake Tapps to Lake Debra Jane and then around Lake Bonney.

“It’s a hilly one,” he said of the run.

The parade into the park will include classic automobile’s from the day’s car show, the Bonney Lake High School Marching Band, police and fire vehicles and even Bonney Lake Daffodil Princess Payton Jensen.

At 10 a.m., the annual skateboard competition, sponsored by Rainier Board Shop, gets under way.

Also at 10 a.m. the first performers will take the main stage, part of a day-long schedule of entertainment filled with local groups such as Michelle’s Studio of Dance and the Auburn Dance Academy interspersed with musical acts like local favorites River Bend and popular acts from last year such as the fire dancers, back for their third Bonney Lake Days.

Headlining this year is local band Aces Up.

In addition, the city has sold out all of its nearly 100 vendor booths.

But the Bonney Lake day festivites are not confined to just Saturday. Things get started tonight, Wednesday, with a performance by the Beatniks, featuring Bonney Lake Police Officer Daron Wolschleger on the drums, as part of the Tunes at Tapps concert series.

Then, Friday, there will be a free showing of the Pixar film “UP,” at Allan Yorke Park.

Also Saturday morning, the Bonney Lake Senior Center is hosting a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. sponsored by the Kiwanis and then hosting its annual rummage sale.

“Should be an exciting day,” Wells said. “And everything is free except the fun run and the skate competition.”

And even as he worked on getting a final surprise ito the park for Saturday, Wells said planning has already begun on next year’s event.

“It’s getting bigger and better than ever!” he said.
