The Sumner School District Board of Directors has named Craig Spencer to serve as interim superintendent for the 2011-2012 school year.

Spencer currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for the District.

In a press release, School Board President Sherm Voiles cited Spencer’s experience within the district as leading to the decision.

“It is our intent that Craig will serve as interim superintendent for at least the next school year,” Voiles said.  “We know he is very highly regarded and respected throughout the District for his leadership, communication skills, integrity, and ability to positively connect with everyone he encounters.

“We believe he is the perfect individual to lead the District as we move forward in a positive direction for our students and families,” he continued.

Spencer has been with Sumner for more than 25 years.

He is a graduate of the University of Washington, with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and a certification in elementary education. Heearned his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and principal credential from Pacific Lutheran University.

He has served as an elementary teacher and principal in the district and was later named as the Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Since 2006, Spencer has served the District as Assistant Superintendent, supervising administrative and support services and providing instructional leadership.

“My priorities will be to keep our momentum moving forward and to ensure we have a very positive and smooth transition. I look forward to working with the Board, principals and administrators, teachers and staff in my new role. I am committed to keeping our District’s focus on our core mission of student learning,” Spencer said.

Spencer takes over for Superintendent Gil Mendoza, who’s last day was June 30. Mendoza announced a mutual separation from the District on June 8, with one additional year left on his contract.

The School Board is mitigating the financial impact to the District of paying out the final year of Mendoza’s contract by not appointing an assistant superintendent and not adding any additional administrative staff.  Several current administrators and principals will assume extra duties, roles and responsibilities of the vacant assistant superintendent position for the 2011-12 school year.

The Board has no immediate plans to search for a permanent superintendent, but will begin discussions about the process and timeline in the fall.
