What to put in an emergency supply kit

BASIC KIT

• Water (at least one gallon per person per day for at least 3 days)

• Food for at least 3 days per person (choose non-perishables that are lightweight and don’t require refrigeration or cooking)

• Flashlight

• Extra batteries

TO BE BETTER PREPARED, ADD:

• One complete change of warm clothing including sturdy shoes and rain gear

• Battery powered radio

• Whistle

• First aid kit

• Medications

• Blanket

• Entertainment items (cards, crossword puzzles, books, toys for children)

TO BE WELL PREPARED, ADD:

• Photocopies of medical insurance cards, insurance policies, IDs, birth certificates

• Extra eyeglasses, hearing-aid batteries, wheelchair batteries

• NOAA weather radio

• Dust mask

• Cash (preferably in smaller denominations)

• Sanitation supplies (toilet paper, soap, feminine supplies, toothpaste, diapers)

• Duct tape

• Tools: pliers, wrench, utility knife

• Paper and pens or pencils

• Emergency out-of-area contact phone numbers

• Map of city and state

• Copy of your disaster plan and emergency contact numbers

• Work gloves

• Waterproof matches

• Compass

• ABC-type fire extinguisher

• Manual can opener

• Plastic trash bags for trash

• Extra house keys and car keys
