High winds sweep through Enumclaw

Enumclaw are residents reported seeing a funnel cloud rip across the Plateau.

G E and B Nursery owners Garry and Ellen Horton were picking up shrubs and thanking their lucky stars Sunday evening after high winds ripped through their greenhouses along Southeast 400th Street in Enumclaw.

“I saw it,” said Ti Hendershot, an employee who was standing with Garry Horton in the showroom when the wind started to kick up. “The width of the funnel cloud was the size of our showroom.”

It uprooted trees on the property, swept off the plastic sheeting on a number of greenhouses, set tree branches flying and left a swath of tipped over shrubs in its wake.

Horton and Hendershot took cover inside the house and were not injured.

“I’m still shaking,” Hendershot said.

Horton said about 4:40 p.m. as they were starting to close up shop, there was rain, hail and then the wind started.

The nursery was not the only report of damage as high winds, thunder, lightning and rain whipped through the area. Trees were reported down across the Franklin Road and across the area.
