Pierce County READS 2014

Pierce County Library and The News Tribune launched Pierce County READS 2014 on March 2 with Portland author Cheryl Strayed’s memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.” Everyone in the county is encouraged to read the same book at the same time—sharing, discussing and coming together as a community. The library’s seventh-annual “one book” program includes 56 hands-on events and a writing contest. It culminates at an author event where Strayed will speak and sign books. The free event starts at 7 p.m. on April 25 at the McGavick Conference Center @ Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood.

JBLM Partnership

Pierce County Library continues to seek opportunities to bring public library service to members of the armed forces and their families at Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM.) The library has taken part in a newcomers orientation and 16 additional events. Library staff signed families up for library cards, and provided information about online and downloadable resources including homework help, genealogy websites, computer classes, car repair manuals, job and business assistance and school-age book lists as well as a link to the library’s military connections website.

Library Awards

Tacoma Community House has named Pierce County Library as Partner of the Year in recognition of commitment and service to their organization and program participants, specifically through citizenship classes and resources. The Emergency Food Network will present the library with the Silver Spoon Award for its support of EFN Food Drives. Behrooz Madjdi, reference associate for Pierce County Library, received outstanding mention for the Library Journal’s 2014 Paralibrarian of the Year Award.
