Today the Court sentenced Michael Clifford Boisselle, 36, to 260 months in prison for the shooting of his roommate Brandon Zomalt in August of 2014. On May 23, a jury found Boisselle guilty on counts of murder in the second degree and unlawful possession of a firearm.

“Michael Boisselle killed Brandon Zomalt and then destroyed evidence to avoid accountability,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “Thanks to the good work of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys John Neeb and Gerald Ham who tied together the remaining evidence, Boisselle is being held accountable.”

In August of 2014, Auburn Police Officers responded to reports of fire on the side of Peasley Canyon Road and discovered two fires near the road. A witness reported seeing an SUV parked near the fires and an African American man with a light complexion wearing blue surgical gloves getting into the vehicle.

Investigators later determined that the vehicle leaving the scene of the fires was registered to Boisselle’s mother.

Investigators searched the sites of the fires and found a spent bullet case, a full bullet, a section of carpet with a large amount of blood on it and a section of kitchen flooring. The blood was analyzed, and the DNA matched that of Zomalt. A witness reported that when she had visited Boisselle’s house, the carpet was pulled up and part of the kitchen floor was missing.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the residence that Boisselle shared with Zomalt and discovered a body, later identified as Zomalt’s, in the advanced stages of decomposition. Zomalt had been dead for several weeks at this point.

Boisselle shot Zomalt several times, including two shots to the trunk of his body and three shots into his head. According to two separate witness reports, Boisselle admitted that he had shot and killed Zomalt.

One of the witnesses noted a bad smell at Boisselle’s residence, but didn’t think much of it because his residence usually smelled bad.

Zomalt is survived by his mother and his children
