National Police Week honored by Enumclaw police officers

In honor of National Police Week, Enumclaw Police Chief Jim Zoll and members of the Enumclaw Police Department placed flags on the grave sites of past department employees.

In honor of National Police Week, Enumclaw Police Chief Jim Zoll and members of the Enumclaw Police Department placed flags on the grave sites of  past department employees.

National Police Week began in 1962 by President John F. Knneedy.

From the National Police Week website:

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Message from Police Chief Jim Zoll:

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week, also known as National Police Week is an annual event celebrated each May in recognition of the men and women of Law Enforcement and the efforts and sacrifices they make each and every day to insure the safety and quality of life in our community.

Each May 15th the Nation honors those officers killed in the line of duty.

In 2007, the Enumclaw Police Department created a memorial program in concert with National Police Week to honor and recognize all police department employees who have served the department and our community in good standing and who are now at rest at either the Enumclaw or Buckley cemeteries.

As part of our program and in concert with our public safety services, we also honor and recognize past fire chiefs from the city of Enumclaw, as well as special recognition for a fire chief from Alaska who is now as rest at the Enumclaw Memorial Cemetery.

It is truly our hope that we never lose sight of the personal efforts and professional sacrifices these individuals have made to the Enumclaw police and fire department and the law enforcement and fire profession. Their spirit and positive determination helped define the professional standards that we all enjoy today. Although they may no longer be with us, they are certainly not forgotten.

Therefore, our memorial program pays solemn tribute to those past employees by placing a law enforcement memorial flag and a single white rose on each member’s grave site.
