The National Weather Service (NWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced an urgent red flag fire weather warning will remain in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday. Scattered thunder and lightning storms may develop, leading to an increased risk of wild fires.

Affected areas include parts of Pierce and King counties east of I-5 and below 1500 feet in elevation, including Sumner and Bonney Lake.

The potential combination of lightning, strong winds and an abundance of dry fuel can contribute to fire starts, according to the NWS.

Thunder and lightning storms can’t be avoided, but there are many fire-starting factors that can be. For information about preventing and preparing for wildfires, please visit East Pierce Fire and Rescue online.
