Partnering to help students succeed | Sumner Mayor Update

There's a success story right in Downtown Sumner of which you may not be aware. We often gather to cheer on the Sumner High School, but did you know we are very lucky to have the Elhi Hill High School as well?

The following is written by Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow:

There’s a success story right in Downtown Sumner of which you may not be aware. We often gather to cheer on the Sumner High School, but did you know we are very lucky to have the Elhi Hill High School as well?  The Elhi Hill High School Program provides a caring environment for students who need services beyond the traditional school day and during the summer to meet state and district standards. Each of the 100 students there have a different story and a different reason for being there. Yet, each one is a life that is getting a great education and the essentials for a bright future.

Elhi Hill is a true partnership among two governments, two churches, and lots of people to help young people who may be struggling a bit. The school is part of the Sumner School District, and they are housed in one of the City’s buildings. We actually just moved them into a larger, better space since they’ve grown so quickly.  They began in the Multipurpose Building by the Sumner Pierce County Library and have now moved to the old Union Bank training facility just south of City Hall on Alder Street.

One of the best things I heard about was the positive interaction with the Sumner Police Officers who drop by to spend time with the students.  I hear that Officer Eller and Officer McDonald are very popular for conversations, ping-pong games, pick-up basketball and even remote control car races. These are students who could likely be wary of police officers but are now building strong relationships that will help shape the rest of their lives.

In addition, Saint Andrew’s Emmanuel Food Pantry provides food and Northwood Baptist Church supports the kids, purchasing basic necessities they may need and providing a scholarship for further education. We don’t hear enough about such partnerships that really succeed in making a difference. Imagine 100 lives each year being set on the right path for success, a success that is won by partnerships and efforts from a variety of people. That’s the definition of community, and something that I hope makes you every much as proud as Sumner High School’s football record!
