An evening of watching fireworks was interrupted when a motorist drove into a couple of parked cars before heading into a group of people.

In the end, eight people were treated the evening of the Fourth of July. The most serious was a pregnant woman who was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Three people, including the driver, were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Enumclaw and others were treated at the scene and released.

According to an Enumclaw Police Department spokesman, people were gathering in the parking lot of a vacant medical building at the intersection of Farman Street and Mountain View Drive about 9:45 p.m. on the Fourth. The lot is commonly used by those watching the fireworks display at the Enumclaw Expo Center.

The investigation is continuing, but police believe a senior citizen – concerned about getting blocked by other cars – attempted to move his vehicle. He reportedly backed into one vehicle, then drove forward, hitting at least one other car before striking a handful of people. He drove over a landscape island and into a hedge before coming to a stop.

None of the injuries appears life-threatening and, as of Wednesday afternoon, it was not known if anyone remained hospitalized.
