The following is from a Pierce County Library System press release:

Teenagers and their parents will learn about teen dating and healthy relationships during free events at Sumner Pierce County Library, 1116 Fryar Ave., starting Thursday, June 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Exodus Housing and The Friends of the Sumner Library sponsor “Expect Respect: Teen Dating and Healthy Relationships.” The free events feature weekly gatherings for teens, and separate monthly meetings for parents.

Orientation meetings for parents start on Thursday, June 6, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Parents may drop in on the first Thursday of the month.

Orientations help parents learn how to talk with teens about healthy relationships, watch for warning signs of abusive behavior, participate in social networking tutorials, and find resources for information.

Teen gatherings start on Thursday, June 13, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Teenagers are invited to drop in on the second, third and fourth Thursdays of the month.

Interactive and fun workshops for teens, ages 13 – 17, help students learn to identify healthy vs. unhealthy behavior, practice social media safety, avoid cyber bullying, and support friends who are in unhealthy relationships.

Nearly 1.5 million teens experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. More than one in 10 teenagers experience physical violence in a dating relationship.
