Suspect leads Bonney Lake police on chase along 410 before crashing into power pole and fleeing on foot

A K-9 unit was called in to track and find the suspect, who led police on a foot chase through backyards in Sumner.

A man with a warrant and no license led Bonney Lake police on a chase down state Route 410 Tuesday night that ended only when K-9 units tracked the man through backyards in Sumner.

The incident began at around 9:50 p.m. when a Bonney Lake officer on routine patrol through AM/PM parking lot in the 18100 block of SR410 observed a car with a cracked windshield that would impair the driver’s view.

As he was driving past the vehicle, the officer noticed a white male, later identified as Bobby Grasser, approach the car and appeared ready to get in until he saw the officer, at which time, according to the police report, the subject immediately appeared nervous and walked away from the vehicle, standing in front of the store and making a call on his cell phone.

According to the officer, it was obvious the suspect did not want to get in the vehicle and drive away with him in the area and the suspect’s actions appeared suspicious.

The officer left the AM/PM lot and drove through a neighboring lot and then saw the vehicle exit the AM/PM and head down Ehli Hill toward Sumner. The car was not driving recklessly, but did appear to be traveling at a high rate of speed.

The officer attempted to catch up and did not do so until 2/3 of the way down the hill, at which time the officer noticed the vehicle had a brake light out and he could see it was tailgating the vehicle in front of it and weaving in its own lane, crossing the fog line twice.

Believing the driver might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the officer turned on his emergency lights and attempted to pull the vehicle over.

In response, the vehicle accelerated and took the 166th Street exit. The officer activated his siren, and the driver accelerated through the stop sign at the bottom of the exit and re-entered the highway at a high rate of speed, which no intention of stopping for the officer.

The vehicle took the Valley Road exit and ran the red light at the end of the ramp at approximately 60 mph and again went straight through and back on to the highway.

The vehicle began to take the Traffic Avenue Exit, but then swerved back on to the highway, but due to the speed, the driver lost control and sideswiped a light pole. The force of the collision toppled the pole, which crashed down on front of the police car, causing minimal damage to the car’s push bars.

Grasser then jumped out of the car and took off on foot toward a wooded area on the north side of SR410.

Officers from Bonney Lake, Sumner, Puyallup and the Washington State Patrol arrived on the scene to set up a containment area as they waited for a K-9 officer from Puyallup to arrive.

The officer also located the suspect’s cell phone, which he tossed as he entered the woods.

During the course of the K-9 track, several 911 calls were received regarding sightings of the suspect running through backyards.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., the K-9 made contact with the suspect, resulting in several bite marks. The suspect was treated by East Pierce Fire and Rescue and was later transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment.

The subject identified himself and told police he fled the vehicle because he did not have a valid license, but a records check revealed a felony warrant for his arrest out of Olympia for escape from community custody.

After being treated for his injuries, Grasser was transported to Pierce County Jail where he was booked for felony eluding, hit and run and on his felony warrant.
