Two planning commissioners file for Sumner council candidacy

Bonney Lake sees only incumbents by second day of election filings.

Two members of the city of Sumner’s planning commission have filed as candidates for city council, as of the second day of Pierce County’s week long filing period for the August 13 primary election.

Commissioner Earle Stuard, a retired assistant finance director for the city of Bellevue, filed for Council Position No. 1 Monday morning. Stuard was appointed to the planning commission in Dec. 2009. He will run against incumbent Ed Hannus, who also filed Monday.

Commissioner Kathy Hayden, a member of the commission since July 2009, filed for Council Position No. 2 Monday morning. The seat is currently held by Randy Hynek, who had not filed as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Council Position No. 3 incumbent Steve Allsop filed for candidacy Tuesday morning. No challengers had filed as of this writing.

Likewise, Mayor Dave Enslow filed to run for another term Monday morning, with no challengers as of the second day of the filing period. Councilman Hynek stated at an early April meeting (Pierce County TV video linked, Hynek’s comments begin at 131:35) that he intended to run for the mayor’s office. Immediately afterward, city attorney Brett Vinson informed Hynek that Washington state election law prohibits the use of public resources — in the case of the April 1 meeting, council time — to promote a candidate or measure for election. Hynek had not filed for candidacy to an elected position as of early Tuesday afternoon.

In the city of Bonney Lake, all incumbents have filed for candidacy, including Neil Johnson for mayor and Randy McKibbin, Dan Swatman and Donn Lewis for city council. No challengers had filed for candidacy as of early Tuesday afternoon.
