Vogel will again head school board

Denise Vogel will continue to serve as the White River School Board’s president.

Vogel was re-elected to the position during the board’s Dec. 8 regular meeting.

Vogel has served on the board since 2005 and represents Director District No. 3, which includes South Prairie and a portion of Wilkeson.

Susan McGuire was re-elected to the board’s vice president position. Jean Lacy will serve as its legislative representative and newcomer Mike Jansen will be the board’s Washington Interscholastic Activities Association representative.

In other business, the board:

• set 6 p.m. Jan. 12 for its next meeting.

• announced winter break will begin Monday and continue through Jan. 2.

• was updated on White River High School’s FFA program.

FFA leaders Mike Burley, president, Kayla LeTourneau, vice president, Sarah Kohout, secretary, Kelsey English, treasurer, Lindsey Nourse, reporter, Taylor Moyer, sentinel, and Christina Ramous, historian, made the presentation to the board.

The group is 66 members strong, down from last year but expected to grow at the end of semester.

FFA recently organized a campus cleanup and a blood drive, where 105 students donated blood.

Chapter members will be caroling Buckley neighborhoods Thursday.

The group’s next meeting is Jan. 11.

• approved out-of-state travel for WRHS special education teacher Pamela Stern to attend the annual meeting of the National Council of LANGUAGE! trainers in California. The event is part of the on-going training Stern needs to maintain her certification for the district.

• was updated on the district’s elementary writing program. Teachers from each of the elementary schools and at every grade level presented their progress with the program.
