Including familiar foods in your emergency preparedness kit is important, according to the American Red Cross. Foods that are high in calories and nutrition are preferable and it’s best to focus on food that requires no refrigeration, water or cooking. Good options include energy bars and nutrition bars, mixed nuts, dried fruits and protein shakes, said Edvalson.
