He recommended including two emergency blankets per family member, as well as nylon cord and duct tape to stake a shelter if necessary. Week six analyzes other gear that may be helpful in an emergency kit.

Edvalson suggests rain ponchos, though in a pinch garbage bags can also be used. A multi-funtional knife, duct tape, waterproof matches, flashlights, batteries, a whistle, first aid kit and candles are also useful during emergencies, said Edvalson. Packing a small amount of cash may be a good idea, with a focus on small bills and coins.
