White River board delays decision on facilities plan

The White River School Board tabled its six-year capital facilities plan for further review after the board found the report to hold conflicting information. Board members asked Rick LaBoyne, district facilities and transportation services director, to submit a second version that reflects the information more accurately at its 6 p.m. Aug. 13 meeting in the board conference room.

The document, which serves as a guide for growth, noted the district, which has seen declining enrollment and has closed two campuses this year, has plenty of room to grow; however, the documents led some to believe the district is at capacity.

Board members, while reviewing the document, noticed the numbers did not support the statements. LaBoyne said it was likely an entering error, but the board decided to table the item, waiting for a more appropriate document.

In other business, the board:

• approved out-of-state travel for White River High School teacher Brian Reckling and students to attend the Future Business Leaders of America leadership conference in Denver in November.

• accepted WRHS teacher Randy Wilson’s resignation from one class period a day.

• hired campus safety and security officer Janet Groves, teacher Kate Hood, dean of students Tim Madden and long-term substitute Bridget Vannice.

• approved the assessment schedule for the 2009-10 school year. The document notes changes in the state testing window.

• OK’d a superintendent internship with the district for WRHS Assistant Principal Greg Borgerding.

• approved the WRHS student handbook. This year’s handbook includes several changes including the six-period schedule, culminating project and the board’s electronics policy.

• approved the surplus of a portable that was used to house the Collins High School library. The structure, which sits on Department of Social and Health Service property, must be removed and the foundation demolished.

• approved a salary schedule for the athletics/activity coordinator. With a reclassification of the position, officials had to refigure the salary. The position is now on a July 1 to June 30 calendar, based on 216 work days; it is an exempt position with a salary range from $61,452 to $72,303, depending upon years of service.

• approved the 2009-12 International Union of Operating Engineers collective bargaining agreement. This contract covers the district’s custodial and maintenance workers. Many of the changes were language reflections. The union ratified the contract earlier.
