H. Wayne Herald died April 20, 2018, at age 96.

H. Wayne Herald died April 20, 2018, at age 96.

He was born in La Grande, Oregon, one of three children born to Gertrude and Homer C. Herald. His childhood involved milking the cow, plowing the garden and years of delivering the town newspaper. He graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 1942 and from Stanford University in 1957 with a doctorate degree in education.

In 1943 he married Margaret Judd of Payette, Idaho. His career first led them to Lake Oswego and Portland, Oregon. He served as a school principal and state president of the Oregon Elementary Principals’ Association. The following 28 years were in Sunnyvale, California, where he was the deputy superintendent of schools. Retirement was spent in Vancouver, Washington, and then the final 12 years close to family in Enumclaw.

His hobbies included fly fishing and flower gardening. His greatest joy and passion was his family.

He is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Interment was at River View Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
