Walter Asmond

Enumclaw resident Walter D. Adsmond, 87, died April 7, 2011.

He was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Piedmont, Kan., to Thomas and Edith (Churchman) Adsmond. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy before graduating from high school. In 2001 he was given a diploma as an honorary graduate of Enumclaw High School. He was a boilermaker third class in the Commission Crew on both the U.S.S. Intrepid and the U.S.S. Midway. After his military duty, he married Betty Jane Garner on Jan. 31, 1946, in Missouri. He worked for Boeing in Kansas and was transferred to Washington state in 1968. He later worked as a dispatcher and mechanic for the Enumclaw School District. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1949, Enumclaw Glacier Gliders and the Round Table at Charlie’s Café.

He is survived by daughter Connie Click and husband Bruce of Crowley, Texas; sons Tom Adsmond and wife Betty Sue of Leon, Kan., and William Adsmond of Enumclaw; daughter-in-law Beverly Adsmond of Enumclaw; sister Wilma French of Great Bend, Kan.; sisters-in-law Bertha Adsmond of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Jo Alice Philipi and husband Joe Art of El Dorado, Kan.; brothers-in-law Marvin French of Wichita, Kan., and Rob Garner of Kansas; 10 grandchildren and 13-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty on Aug. 1, 2009, son Gary Adsmond, brother Roy Adsmond and sister Marie French.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Weeks’ Enumclaw Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Thweatt officiating. A reception will follow at 3 p.m. at Charlie’s Café in Enumclaw. Inurnment with Navy honors will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery at a later date.
