Cooperative skies were only slightly drizzly the afternoon of Sept. 15, when the Enumclaw High cross country program hosted a five-team jamboree on the shores of scenic Deep Lake.

Joining the host Hornets for a tour of the 2.8-mile course - twice around the lake and then some – were a diverse lot from Hazen, Highline and Kennedy high schools, along with the Panthers from nearby Bonney Lake High.

The highly-regarded EHS girls squad placed five runners in the top eight, led by Chandler Weiman, who was third overall with a time of 19 minutes, 17 seconds. Finishing fourth and fifth were Payton Vick and Emily Eilertson, who clocked times of 19:32 and 20:05, respectively. Julia Harris came in seventh at 20:17, just a second ahead of teammate Taryn Schreiner.

Rounding out the top seven for Enumclaw were Chelsea Weiman, 16th place with a time of 20:45, and Lindsay Ross, 17th overall, 21:06.

Heading the EHS effort in the boys varsity race was Cory Johnson with a time of 16:28. Alec Rhome was the second Hornet across the line, finishing in 16:39. Completing the EHS crew were Kevin Nelson, 11th place, 16:56; Peter Berger, 12th, 16:58; Hunter Chlebowski, 17th, 17:10; and Caleb Gwerder, 24th, 18:01.

Coach Jeff Jacobson and 74 Hornets made the annual trip to Saturday’s Seaside Invitational, where runners from 95 schools dashed over courses identified as easy, medium and hard. Each was divided into four divisions to accommodate the multitude of participants.

In the end, the top EHS finishers were Johnson, who wound up 20th in his division, and Eilertson, who placed 23rd.
