EHS VOLLEYBALL: Enumclaw can land in second

Enumclaw High’s volleyball squad has been stuck in third place in the South Puget Sound League 3A standings for most of the past two months, but that could change.

The Hornets hosted Bonney Lake Tuesday night, with EHS entering the contest at 6-3, compared with Bonney Lake’s 7-2 mark. If Enumclaw pulled out a victory, the two would be tied, with a coin flip likely determining the league’s No. 2 position.

Setting the stage for the showdown, EHS snuffed out its foes last week, beating Lakes by a 25-13, 25-12, 25-18 margin and Peninsula 25-17, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-18.

HayleeMae Dennis appeared to be ready for the grueling postseason war, as she posted a total of 24 kills against the Lancers and Seahawks.

Setter Gina Sanders put together a 61-assist week, which brought a smile to her coach’s face.

“I’ve seen a definite improvement in this young squad lately and everyone is getting involved,” Carel said. “Gina has made sure of that, as she has done a fabulous job of distributing the assists around, which makes us a little less predictable.”

Senior hitters Katina Ferguson and Richelle Carel also contributed. In the meeting with Lakes, Carel notched seven kills, while in the road trip to PHS, Ferguson registered 13 kills and a handful of aces and Carel accrued a half dozen aces as well.

Carel’s crew will participate in Saturday’s subdistrict tournament at Auburn Mountainview, to decide who will be moving on and the seeds for the SPSL 3A district proceedings, also hosted by Auburn Mountainview.
