WRHS GIRLS BASKETBALL: White River girls sandwich SPSL win between nonleague defeats
In their biggest test of the still-young season, the White River High girls basketball team fell 58-54 Saturday night to highly-regarded Kennedy Catholic.
Seniors Brooke Paulson and Rani Wiegand scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, to lead the Hornet offense, and Wiegand pulled down a dozen rebounds.
But the story of the game might have been found in the turnover column, where White River committed too many mistakes.
Kennedy, a Class 3A power, was led by University of Washington-bound Aminah Williams, who scored 17 points and added 11 rebounds, seven steals and three assists.
White River played nearly even with the Kennedy girls, who won the state title two seasons ago, trailing by just one point after three quarters.
The loss dropped White River to 5-2 overall.
Friday had the Hornets traveling to Steilacoom and ringing up a 57-47 South Puget Sound League victory over the Sentinels.
Wiegand led all scorers with 18 points. Kennedy Hobert added 12 and Paulson chipped in with 11.
The Hornets began their three-games-in-three-days stretch Thursday by hosting a touring team from Melbourne, Australia. The Aussies have impressed during their trek through Washington and left the White River gym with a 64-61 victory.
Paulson posted a game-high 24 points and Wiegand added 14.
