WRHS BOYS WRESTLING: Hornets take Fife crown

With five champions and 13 place-winners overall, the White River High boys wrestling team captured the Impromptu tournament at Fife Saturday.
Trevor Kurtz, Brandon Short, Caden Pugmire, Noah Geehan and Dave Meagher were title winners.
Kurtz defeated Daniel Wernofsky of Emerald Ridge 14-4 for the 112-pound championship. Short won the 135-pound crown by pinning Joey Hanson of Centralia. Pugmire was first at 160 pounds with a 5-1 decision over Preston Churchhill of Centralia. Geehan earned his title at 171 pounds with a 9-2 decision over Nico Lopez of Emerald Ridge and Meagher was the heavyweight champion, pinning Garrett Pankuk in 3 minutes, 47 seconds.
Richard Geddes, 119, and Jeff Kisner, 215, also made the finals, finishing second.
Hornets Cody Schwab, 103, Tyler Worthen, 125, Austin Shirey, 140, Tony Tyler, 145, and Chris Skinner, 189, finished third.
Gavin Severson earned a fourth-place finish at 152 for the Hornets.
The Hornets also topped Franklin Pierce Thursday night and gave Enumclaw a run for its money Jan. 12 in nonleague action, but came up shy. That story and a slideshow is posted online at www.courierherald.com.
