WRHS WRESTLING: WRHS move 15 toward state
Fifteen is the magic number for White River High. Fifteen Hornets will move on to Saturday’s regional wrestling tournament at Franklin Pierce where they will meet up with teams from the Olympic League to fight for the top four spots to state.
The 15 earned their regional berth during the subregional tournament hosted by White River. The Hornets won the tournament with 386 points. Fife was a distant second at 203.
Hornets Brandon Short, Austin Shirey, Caden Pugmire, Noah Geehan, Jeff Kisner and David Meagher will enter Saturday’s competition as the top seeds from the South Puget Sound League 2A after earning subregional titles Saturday.
Short pinned Shaun Eurell of Fife in 2 minutes, 36 seconds for the 135-pound crown. Shirey also won by fall, 1:36, over Tyler Kaplan of Franklin Pierce at 140 pounds. Pugmire pinned his 160-pound title-round opponent in 3:22. Geehan picked up the title with a 5:16 pin over Nick Belcourt of Fife at 171 pounds.
Kisner earned the 215-pound victory with a 15-3 decision over Eatonville’s Freddie Baumann and Meagher took a 5-3 decision over Bryce Wells of Eatonville at heavyweight.
Trevor Kurtz, 112, Carl Klein, 119, Tony Tyler, 152, and Chris Skinner, 189, were also in the final round, finishing second.
Richard Geddes, 112, Brennan Gulin, 160, Travis Morris, 171, and Tyler Kilcup, 189, finished third.
Lucas Doll, 103, was a fourth-place finisher.
Cody Schwab, 103, Bryce Thompson, 119, and Tyler Worthen, 125, finished fifth and will serve as alternates.
Bryan Walker, Caleb Maurseth and Andre Fails walked away sixth.
