For a first-year program, the Enumclaw High gymnasts are making quite a name for themselves.
The Hornets finished second at last weekend’s subdistrict meet and earned one of only two team berths to Friday’s district meet at Auburn Mountainview High School. Auburn Mountainview claimed the No. 1 team berth into districts with a score of 166.60 while the Hornets totaled 166.35.
At districts, both teams and individuals will be battling for a spot in the Feb. 18-19 state meet, to be contested again at the Tacoma Dome exhibit hall.
Enumclaw’s subdistrict effort was paced by Olivia Bannerot, who wound up tied as the No. 1 all-around competitor. Individually, she won the floor exercise, was second on the bars and beam and took third in the vault. Teammate Molly Mattheis was third in the all-around and Sarah Lurry had second-place showings in the vault and floor exercise to wind up fourth all-around.
Other noteworthy Hornets performances were turned in by Kelsey Messer, who finished first on the beam and third in the floor exercise; Nicole Wilson, fifth on the beam; and Erica Bonthuis, ninth in the vault.
Participating for the EHS team all season have been a few White River students, who competed under their own banner at subdistricts. White River’s Kelly Coyle qualified for all four events in the district meet.Contact Enumclaw Courier Herald Senior Writer, Editor Kevin Hanson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-802-8205.
