SLIDESHOW: EHS WATER POLO: Hornets fall from first after losing to Auburn Mountainview

In a game that likely determined the girls water polo league championship, Enumclaw High lost to Auburn Mountainview 16-13 Thursday.

The Lions maintain first place in the East Division with a 5-0 record, while Enumclaw is second at 4-2. Both teams have already played each other twice and are scheduled to play a second game with each remaining league team before the end of the regular season.

Thursday, EHS started off with goals by Hannah Kinniburgh and Annie Birklid in the opening two minutes of play. Mountainview got on the board midway in the first period, but Ali Ballard responded with a Hornet goal. The two teams exchanged goals through the quarter for a 5-4 Enumclaw advantage.

The Lions scored five goals and then the teams exchanged goals up until the end.

Kelsey Sonneson led EHS in scoring with five goals. Ballard and Birklid scored three.

Friday, the Hornets beat Puyallup 15-10 in a nonleague contest. The home Vikings took an early 2-0 lead, but the Hornets tied the game, held a 7-5 lead at halftime and went on a 5-1 scoring spree in the third period.

Erin Stucker led EHS scorers with seven. Ballard had three. Birklid scored two.

Goalie Megan Lesmeister earned the 28-0 shutout over Bonney Lake/Sumner April 12. Scoring for EHS were: Ballard and Kinniburgh, four each; Bella Davenport, Alina VanRuff and Stucker, three each; Sonneson, Birklid, Allie Larrea, Katie Larrea and Logann Erskine, two; and Alexis Firlotte, one.
