WRHS POWERLIFTING: Davis powers to state lifting record

White River High’s Shelby Davis powered her way to a state high school weightlifting record during the recent state meet in White Salmon, Wash.
The sophomore standout and defending state champion dead lifted 365 pounds for her record and led White River High’s women’s team to a third-place finish. The men’s team finished second.
“Both teams did a fantastic job,” coach Juan Garibay said.
Davis was the lone Hornet to bring home a state title and the first female lifter to win back-to-back state championships in powerlifting at White River. Her total for all three lifts was 790 pounds. Her best moment came in the deadlift when she tied the state record at 365 pounds. Davis now shares the record with Tonya Kreis from Toppenish, coach Garibay’s alma mater. Kreis set the record in 1991.
White River lifters Brian Mitchell and Monica Estes were close, bringing home runner-up finishes.
Amedeo Gallucci, Rigoberto Molinero, D.J. Barbee and Acacia Halstensen-Umipig finished third.
Lucus Doll, Blake Maresh, Taylor Moyer, Caleb Maurseth and Kali Thretheway were fourth-place finishers.
Stephan Dominguez, David Meagher and Johnna Coughlin earned fifth-place finishes. Hornet Evan Green placed sixth and Austin May and Josh Miller finished seventh.
“Everyone did a great job and set personal records at the meet,” Garibay said.
